Our upcoming research project BSopt (Business Semantics on top of Process Technologies) has won an award for the best research project submission in the area of Semantic Systems!

Next week Marco will present our paper “Inter-organizational Systems: From Business Values over Business Processes to Deployment” at the IEEE International Conference on Digital Ecosystems and Technologies in Phitsanulok (Thailand). The abstract of the paper:
Inter-organizational systems have significantly been affected by Service-oriented Architectures (SOA) and Web Services - the state-of-the-art technology to implement SOA. SOA is said to enable quick and inexpensive changes of the IT in order to establish new business partnerships or to reflect changes in existing partnerships. However, current approaches to inter-organizational systems focus too much on existing Web Services standards and, thus, on the technology layer. In such an approach the technology drives the business. In this paper we analyze the shortcomings of this bottom-up approach. As an alternative we suggest a top-down methodology where the business requirements drive the technology. This methodology starts off with the business value perspective, leading to a business process perspective and resulting in an IT execution perspective. We do not invent any new approaches on each of these layers, rather we outline how existing approaches are used and combined into a business requirements driven approach to inter-organizational systems.
For those interested we have uploaded a first version of the UML Profile for REA for Enterprise Architect together with a (still incomplete) test model. We will continue our collaborative work with Prof. McCarthy in order to allow for a seamless integration of REA into the UMM.
Bill McCarthy from Michigan State university is currently in Vienna and we are working together on a UMM specialization module for REA (Resources-Events-Agents). The REA Enterprise Information Architecture covers the value chain and supply chain of an enterprise system. A first version of the specialization is scheduled for the UMM Forum meeting taking place in Mexiko City from the 7th - 11th April 2008.

As part of the public lectures in electronic commerce Jaap Gordijn from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam presented the e3value methodology which has been developed by him. The e3value methodology helps the modeler to understand value flows between business partners. More information, academic work and tools around e3value can be found on the e3value website.

For modeling UMM 2.0 in MagicDraw (version 12.5), we made a first profile implementation. It contains the conceptual view and, of course, all stereotypes (in a folder called abstract syntax). For modeling you only need the profile. UMM 2.0 Profile for Magic Draw (pre-Draft1-20080109)
The paper entitled “Modeling eGovernment processes with UMM” has been accepted for publication in the Informatica Journal as part of a special issue dedicated to eGovernment research.
A first UMM 2.0 example model (Order From Quote) as it will be used in the UMM 2.0 specification is available. Please see the Example Models section for more details.
The example model already uses the new stereotypes as defined in the UMM 2.0 meta model. An example for the new package structure using the new stereotypes is given below.

This week during the F2F meeting in Zurich, we have produced a first pre-draft1 version of a UMM 2.0 profile for the UML modeling tool Enterprise Architect. The profile is seperated according UMM 2.0’s package structure, but packaged as a MDG Technology file. In order to work with the profile in Enterprise Architect you have to do the following steps:
